Sweet Summer Freedom

Sometimes you lose sight.

You just don’t know if you have it in you.

Maybe you’re tired.

Possibly unfocused.

Perhaps life has taken over.

Writing is not like doing the dishes.

It requires presence.

To write clearly is to write in the moment.

At the start of the summer, I was all of the above. Tired, unfocused, and life, with all its myriad responsibilities, had taken over.

I did not think I had it in me.

Then, after a few weeks, I recalled the words of a dear friend: Writing is the fun part.

And, just like that, I remembered joy.

The delight of walking down a New York City street, of the Hudson bathed in sunlight, of eating ice cream on a Sunday evening.

Capturing moments in words…this is sweet.

Here’s what’s bitter: marketing and promotion. It’s exhausting and somewhat soul depleting.

So, this summer, I made an executive decision: I am focusing on joy.

In the fall there will be myriad responsibilities. Why not add another one on the pile?

For now, the sweet taste of summer freedom is all the joy I need.
