The List: Part Eight

These days, I read everything: fiction, non-fiction, journalism. I’m still catching up on the classics. I also listen to books on Audible.

Although I am no fan of technology, I will admit a good storyteller will draw me in. My favorites? Colin Firth reads Graham Greene, Jonathan Pryce and Du Maurier, and Miriam Gargoyles on Dickens. These actors are masterful and bring out character, dialogue and accent work far beyond the average voice-over interpretation.

And in terms of nostalgia, I will often revisit the books of youth: Rebecca, The Great Gatsby, A Separate Peace. The good news? They all hold up. There is also that wonderful phenomenon, for which there might be a name, when the reading experience is different depending on one’s age.

A perfect example: a recent take on Gatsby revealed how funny it is. I don’t remember the humor from when I first read it in ninth grade.

These books are like dear old friends. Always there. Always waiting for another visit.
